Erfoud Fossils & Geology Tour

Hundreds of millions of years ago, the region around Erfoud lay under a warm sea. Today its rocks are packed with marine fossils, and this half-day tour helps you understand — and spot — them.

The experience

About this activity

The limestones around Erfoud date largely from the Devonian period, roughly 420–360 million years ago. They’re famous for trilobites, long cone-shaped orthoceras (an ancient relative of squid) and goniatites, while ammonites are also widely sold in the region. Your guide takes you to the landscapes where fossil-bearing rock is quarried and explains how these creatures lived and were preserved.

You can then visit a workshop where blocks of fossil limestone are cut and polished into tables, basins and decorative pieces. Workshop visits are optional, and there is no obligation to buy.

If you are thinking of buying, take care: composite or fake trilobites (cast in resin or assembled from parts) are common. Ask how a piece was prepared, buy from established sellers, request a receipt, and check your home country’s rules as well as Moroccan export requirements — larger or scientifically significant specimens may need documentation of legal origin.

  • Devonian marine fossils: trilobites, orthoceras and ammonites

Questions

FAQs

How old are the fossils?

Most are from the Devonian period, roughly 420–360 million years ago, when the area lay under a shallow sea.

How can I tell if a trilobite is real?

It’s difficult. Look for natural rock texture around the fossil, ask how it was prepared, buy from reputable sellers and get a receipt. Very cheap ‘perfect’ specimens are often casts or composites.

Can I take fossils home?

Small polished items are commonly bought, but rules vary. Ask the seller about legal origin and paperwork, and check your home country’s import rules.
