The experience

About this activity

Your driver-guide follows tracks around the erg, crossing hamada plains and skirting the dunes. Common stops include Khamlia (about 15 minutes from Merzouga), known for its Gnawa community, the old mining areas and fossil beds of the region, and viewpoints over the dune edge. Where nomad families are camped nearby and happy to receive visitors, a short tea stop may be possible — never guaranteed, always with consent and respect for privacy. In rare wet years a shallow lake can appear near the dunes and attract birds, including flamingos on occasion.

The excursion suits all ages and fitness levels, and works well for families or those who prefer not to ride camels or quads. Driving stays on established tracks and away from camps and villages; in summer we plan it for the cooler part of the day. We plan the route for your date and interests, and your driver-guide can explain the history of each stop as you go.

  • No riding or driving required
  • Khamlia and its Gnawa heritage
  • Fossil and old mining areas
  • Seasonal lakes in rare wet years
  • Flexible stops

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

4x4 excursions run only in designated or permitted areas, away from desert camps, villages and grazing herds. Every rider receives a safety briefing before setting off, and a helmet, goggles and a scarf (cheche) are provided — exact equipment to be confirmed with the operator at booking. Minimum ages for drivers and passengers are set by the operator and must be confirmed in advance (as a common reference, solo drivers are often 16+, with younger passengers riding alongside an adult — please confirm). No alcohol before or during the activity. Not recommended during pregnancy or for anyone with back or neck problems, as dune terrain is bumpy. In summer we schedule rides for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the hottest hours. Seatbelts must be worn; child seats should be requested in advance. We stick to established tracks and permitted zones to limit noise and erosion, keep clear of wildlife and nomad camps, and carry out all litter.

Good to know

  • A good option for travellers who prefer not to ride.
  • Off-road tracks are bumpy — mention back problems.
  • Bring cash for tea or small purchases.
  • Ask before photographing people.
