Day tripMerzouga Day Trip: Rissani, Khamlia & the Erg Chebbi Loop
A local loop around Merzouga: Gnawa music in Khamlia, Rissani’s souk and ksar, palm groves and fossil workshops.

Erfoud is a calm town on the edge of the Tafilalet palm groves. It is famous for fossils quarried in the surrounding hills and makes a good stop on the way to or from Merzouga.
The rocks around Erfoud contain marine fossils hundreds of millions of years old — orthoceras, ammonites and trilobites — which are cut and polished in local workshops.
The town is also known for its dates, celebrated each autumn at a date festival, and as a gateway to the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
October to April. The date harvest and festival take place in autumn.
Day trip or overnight? Erfoud is an easy excursion from Merzouga. Fes and Marrakech are far away — they require a full travel day (Fes) or two (Marrakech).
