Short (≤ 2 h)Khamlia Village Visit near Merzouga
A guided, respectful walk through Khamlia — its earthen lanes, Gnawa heritage and daily life at the edge of Erg Chebbi.

Just beyond the dunes, small oases keep life green in the desert. This easy walk shows you how families farm palm groves and gardens, and how water is shared in a place where every drop counts.
With a local guide you’ll follow narrow paths between date palms, vegetable plots and fields of alfalfa or barley. Your guide explains how irrigation channels — and, in parts of the region, the old underground khettara system — carry water to the gardens, and how families divide water turns between them.
The route passes through an earthen village where you can see traditional mud-brick building techniques, and may include mint tea with a local family if they are happy to welcome visitors. Access to homes is never guaranteed and hosts are fairly compensated.
Gardens are private land, so we stay on paths and follow the guide’s lead. Please ask before photographing people working in the fields.
Timings shift with the season (sunrise and sunset change by more than two hours across the year).
We confirm these details in your written quote:
Flat, easy walking on dirt paths. Wear closed shoes, a hat and sunscreen, carry water, and avoid midday heat in warmer months. Irrigation channels can be slippery.
