The experience

About this activity

Day one follows the familiar pattern: a sunset ride or drive to camp, dinner and a night under the stars. The difference is that you do not have to leave the next morning. The middle day can be shaped to your interests. Popular options include a 4x4 loop around the erg to Khamlia, where Gnawa musicians welcome visitors, a dune walk to a high viewpoint, sandboarding, or a visit to nomad families where they are present and willing to receive guests. In rare wet years, a seasonal lake may form near the dunes and attract birds. In summer, the hot middle hours are best spent resting in shade.

A second evening brings another sunset and a chance for stargazing or night photography when the moon and weather allow. You can stay at the same camp both nights or move between camps; on the final morning we return you to the dune edge. Staying at a camp deeper in the erg means the second night is often quieter than the first, once the short-stay guests have left in the morning.

  • Two sunsets and two sunrises in the dunes
  • Full flexible day in between
  • Options: Khamlia, dune walk, sandboarding, 4x4
  • More time for stargazing
  • Same or different camps

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Desert nights can be cold from November to February, close to freezing at times, and summer days very hot. Camps are reached by camel or 4x4 over soft sand; tell us in advance about mobility needs so we can suggest the most accessible option. Camel rides carry health caveats (back problems, pregnancy, weight guideline set by the operator). Use a torch at night, keep tent zips closed against insects, and drink plenty of water. On the middle day, avoid exertion in the hottest hours, especially May–September.

Good to know

  • A full day in the dunes is best outside the summer heat.
  • Bring a book — downtime is part of the charm.
  • Plan any motorised activities for early morning or late afternoon.
  • Two nights doubles your chances of a clear sky.

Questions

FAQs

Is a whole day in the desert too long?

Most guests find it relaxing. Outside summer there is plenty to do; in high summer, midday is best for resting in the shade.

Can we change camps between nights?

Yes — for example one night at a simpler camp and one at a luxury camp. Ask us.
