Half day4x4 Desert Excursion around Erg Chebbi
Sit back while an experienced driver takes you around the erg and its villages.

The Merzouga area is well known to birders for its desert specialities. This half-day outing explores contrasting habitats — dune edges, palm groves, stony hamada and, after rains, the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji.
Birdlife here is seasonal and varies from year to year. Species that may be seen around Merzouga include desert sparrow, fulvous babbler, desert wheatear, brown-necked raven and various larks, while Egyptian nightjar is sometimes found at certain times of year. Houbara bustard is rare and shy; sightings are possible but unlikely. Spring and autumn migration periods can bring additional visitors.
Dayet Srji, west of Merzouga, is a seasonal lake that only holds water after significant rains. When it does, it may attract waterbirds — sometimes including flamingos — but in dry years it is simply an empty basin. We’ll check conditions before your trip.
Our regular guides know the area well, but for serious birders we recommend a specialist bird guide, available on request. Please keep a respectful distance from birds and nests, and don’t use playback in sensitive areas.
Timings shift with the season (sunrise and sunset change by more than two hours across the year).

Off-road tracks can be bumpy — tell us about back problems or pregnancy. Carry water and sun protection; birding starts early to avoid the heat.

Spring and autumn are generally most rewarding, including migration periods. Resident desert species can be seen year-round, but nothing is guaranteed.
Only if the lake holds water after rains and birds are present. In dry periods the lake is empty.
