Day tripMerzouga Day Trip: Rissani, Khamlia & the Erg Chebbi Loop
A local loop around Merzouga: Gnawa music in Khamlia, Rissani’s souk and ksar, palm groves and fossil workshops.

Rissani has been a trading centre for over a thousand years. Its market and earthen ksour make it one of the most authentic visits near Merzouga.
Nearby lie the ruins of Sijilmassa, once a great caravan city on trans-Saharan trade routes for gold, salt and goods. The Tafilalet is also the ancestral home of Morocco’s ruling Alaouite dynasty.
Today Rissani is known for its market, traditionally busiest on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, where locals buy produce, dates, spices and livestock.
October to April. Visit on a market day for the busiest atmosphere.
Day trip or overnight? Rissani is an easy half-day trip from Merzouga. Fes and Marrakech require full travel days, not day trips.
