Photography Camel Tour in Erg Chebbi

A standard camel trek moves on just as the light gets interesting. This longer outing is built for photographers: we time it around golden hour and stop wherever the shapes and shadows are best.

The experience

About this activity

Erg Chebbi is a superb subject — high crests, sharp ridgelines and patterns that change with every wind. The best results come in the first and last hours of daylight, when side-light picks out the ripples and the dunes cast deep shadows. We plan the route so you reach strong viewpoints at those times. Light changes quickly near sunrise and sunset, and those times shift by roughly two hours between midsummer and midwinter.

Your guide can position the caravan for silhouettes along a ridge, walk the camels past you for repeat passes, and wait while you change lenses. The camels rest between takes and are never pushed for a shot. We ask you not to photograph guides or local people without asking first; most are happy to help if asked politely. The tour runs as sunrise or sunset session, or can be extended into a night stay for Milky Way photography when the moon and weather allow. Bring a protective bag — fine sand is hard on equipment.

  • Timed for golden hour and long shadows
  • Caravan silhouettes on a ridge
  • Slower pace with repeat passes
  • Option to extend into a night shoot
  • Guide familiar with good viewpoints

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Camel riding is gentle but not for everyone. The camel kneels for you to mount and dismount, and the two lurches as it stands and sits can jar the back, so tell us beforehand about back or neck problems, recent surgery or hip issues. We do not recommend riding during pregnancy. A weight guideline applies for the animals’ welfare — the exact limit is set by the operator and must be confirmed before booking. On steep descents your guide may ask you to dismount and walk, which is safer for you and easier on the camel. Our camels are rested between rides, watered, and never overloaded; a guide leads the caravan on foot at all times. Keep straps secured when riding; heavy kit is safer carried by you on foot or in a padded bag on the saddle where the guide approves.

Good to know

  • Use a dust-proof bag and avoid changing lenses in wind.
  • A polarising filter and lens cloth are useful.
  • Drones generally require authorisation in Morocco — do not bring one without checking current rules.
  • Always ask before photographing people.
