About this activity
Erg Chebbi is surrounded by hamada — flat, dark stony plain — which contrasts dramatically with the orange sand. This excursion uses permitted tracks to loop along the edge of the erg, with sections in designated dune areas and longer stretches on the hamada. The change of scenery is part of the appeal: from black gravel to orange sand within a few minutes.
A typical route heads south towards Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa music heritage, where you can stop for tea (a music visit can be arranged separately). Depending on the season and recent rainfall, the route may pass areas where a shallow seasonal lake forms in rare wet years. The ride is timed for the cooler part of the day, and in summer only early morning or late afternoon. All riding stays away from camps, inhabited areas and herds, and the guide adapts the route to the ability of the group.

Safety, ages & accessibility
ATV rides run only in designated or permitted areas, away from desert camps, villages and grazing herds. Every rider receives a safety briefing before setting off, and a helmet, goggles and a scarf (cheche) are provided — exact equipment to be confirmed with the operator at booking. Minimum ages for drivers and passengers are set by the operator and must be confirmed in advance (as a common reference, solo drivers are often 16+, with younger passengers riding alongside an adult — please confirm). No alcohol before or during the activity. Not recommended during pregnancy or for anyone with back or neck problems, as dune terrain is bumpy. In summer we schedule rides for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the hottest hours. We stick to established tracks and permitted zones to limit noise and erosion, keep clear of wildlife and nomad camps, and carry out all litter. On village approaches we ride slowly or park outside.
