Day tripDay Trip from Fes to Chefchaouen
See the blue lanes of Chefchaouen in one very long day from Fes – about 3.5–4 hours each way. Overnight stays recommended.

The north of Morocco feels different: green Rif mountains, Andalusian-influenced towns and two seas. This tour gives Chefchaouen two nights so you can enjoy its blue lanes in the quiet early morning, adds an optional hike in the Talassemtane National Park, and finishes in Tangier at the meeting of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
Fes → Chefchaouen (2 nights, Akchour option) → Tetouan → Tangier → Cap Spartel → Tangier
Best for: Travellers who want the north at a relaxed pace, photographers, walkers and those ending their trip in Tangier or crossing to Spain.
Driving times are approximate and exclude long stops; they vary with weather, roads and traffic.
We leave Fes in the morning and drive north through rolling farmland and olive groves towards the Rif mountains, stopping for coffee along the way. The road climbs as the landscape grows greener, and by early afternoon you reach Chefchaouen, tucked beneath two peaks. After checking in to your riad, take a gentle first walk through the blue lanes to Plaza Uta el-Hammam, with its kasbah and the octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque. Towards sunset, a 30-minute uphill walk to the Spanish Mosque gives a lovely view over the town. Evening free to try local goat’s cheese and Rif specialities.
Choose your pace today. Nature lovers can drive about 45 minutes to Akchour, the entrance to the Talassemtane National Park, and hike with a local guide along the river to the waterfalls, swimming in green pools in warm weather. A separate trail leads to God’s Bridge, a natural rock arch. Allow three to six hours of walking depending on the route, on paths that can be rocky and involve river crossings. Alternatively, stay in Chefchaouen: explore the medina early before day visitors arrive, visit the kasbah museum and garden, and browse weavers’ workshops. Photography is welcome in the lanes, but please ask before photographing residents.
After breakfast we drive about an hour to Tetouan, whose whitewashed medina, listed by UNESCO, reflects the arrival of refugees from Andalusia centuries ago. With a local guide you can visit the artisan school, the tanneries and the old Jewish quarter. After lunch, continue for about an hour to Tangier. Check in and spend the late afternoon in the kasbah, where viewpoints look across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain on clear days. The Grand Socco, the American Legation museum and the old cafés of the medina reward an evening wander.
This morning we drive west along the coast to Cap Spartel, the north-western tip of Africa, where a lighthouse stands above the meeting of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. A short drive further are the Caves of Hercules, whose sea opening resembles a map of Africa, and nearby beaches where camel rides are sometimes offered. Return to Tangier by late morning or lunchtime for a drop-off at your hotel, the port, the Tangier-Ville train station or Tangier airport. If you are heading south, the Al Boraq high-speed train reaches Rabat in about 1 hour 20 minutes and Casablanca not long after.
We confirm these details in your written quote:
Three nights in riads or hotels – two in Chefchaouen and one in Tangier. Medina riads are atmospheric but reached on foot; we can choose hotels with vehicle access if you prefer. Budget, standard and luxury options are available.
Daily breakfast is the typical plan; other meals are flexible. Travel is by private air-conditioned vehicle with driver. A local hiking guide for Akchour can be arranged on request.
Chefchaouen’s medina is hilly with many steps; Akchour trails are rocky, slippery when wet and involve river crossings – sturdy shoes are essential and the hike is not suitable for people with limited mobility. River levels can rise quickly after rain. Driving days are moderate. Riads often have steep stairs; tell us about mobility needs in advance.

Yes, the route works well in reverse – useful if you arrive by ferry from Spain.
The walk to the first waterfalls is moderate; longer routes and God’s Bridge are more demanding. Your guide will suggest the right option.
