Itinerary

Driving times are approximate and exclude long stops; they vary with weather, roads and traffic.

  1. 1

    Marrakech – Imlil – Tizi n’Tamatert – Village Gîte

approx. 1.5 h to Imlil; then approx. 4–5 h walking

After the drive of around an hour and a half from Marrakech to Imlil, you meet your guide and, if requested, the muleteer who will carry your bags. The walk begins gently through the village of Tamatert and climbs on a good track to the Tizi n’Tamatert pass, at about 2,280 m, for views back over the Imlil valley towards the Toubkal massif. Descending the far side, the path passes terraced barley fields and walnut trees to the villages of the upper valley, such as Ouaneskra or Tacheddirt. Lunch is usually a picnic prepared by the team. In the late afternoon you reach your gîte or homestay, where mint tea and a home-cooked tagine are typical.

  2. 2

    Valley Villages and Mountain Paths

    approx. 5–6 h walking

Today is the longest walking day. Depending on season and fitness, your guide may lead you over a higher pass into a neighbouring valley or on a loop linking several hamlets on the hillsides. Expect steady climbs and descents on rocky mule paths, with stops to watch villagers at work in the fields, see the traditional irrigation channels and, where welcomed, visit a family home for tea. Lunch is taken in a shady spot. You reach your second village in the afternoon, with time to rest, wash and wander. Please ask before photographing people; many residents prefer not to be photographed, and your guide can help you ask politely.

OvernightVillage gîte or homestay (subject to availability and the family’s consent)
MealsBreakfast, lunch and dinner (typical plan – to be confirmed)
  3. 3

    Return to Imlil – Marrakech

approx. 3–4 h walking; then approx. 1.5 h to Marrakech

After breakfast, the final stage returns towards Imlil, often via the Azzaden side or a quieter path through juniper woodland and terraced hamlets, with views of the peaks you have been circling. The walk is shorter today, giving time to arrive in Imlil for lunch on a terrace or in a guesthouse. In the early afternoon we transfer back to Marrakech, arriving in time for an evening in the medina. If you have more time, this trek can be extended or combined with an attempt on Toubkal, subject to fitness and conditions. Your guide will adjust the exact route at any point if weather or trail conditions make it necessary.
