The experience

About this activity

The soft, fine sand of Erg Chebbi makes good boarding terrain. Your guide picks a slope to match the group — a short, gentle face for beginners and children, steeper ones for those with experience. Most people start sitting or lying on the board, which is easy and surprisingly fast. Erg Chebbi’s larger dunes, which reach around 150 m, offer long runs, but most sessions use shorter, safer slopes closer to the dune edge.

The hardest part is walking back up: dune climbing is tiring, so sessions usually involve a handful of runs rather than dozens. Late afternoon, when the sand is cooler, is the best time, and it combines well with a sunset camel ride or a camp stay. Boards are basic compared with snowboards and the experience depends on the sand; it is about fun rather than speed.

  • Suitable for beginners and children
  • Sit-down or stand-up options
  • Combines well with camel rides or camp stays
  • Late-afternoon sessions for cooler sand

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Climbing dunes is strenuous — not recommended for anyone with heart, knee or back problems, or during pregnancy. Children must be supervised, and steeper faces are only for confident adults. Keep feet first or sit on the board; head-first runs are not allowed. Avoid the hottest hours in summer — the sand can burn bare skin. Minimum ages are set by the operator — please confirm.

Good to know

  • Wear long trousers to protect your legs.
  • Bring water — climbing is thirsty work.
  • Late afternoon has cooler sand and better light.
  • Keep phones zipped away.
