Short (≤ 2 h)Khamlia Village Visit near Merzouga
A guided, respectful walk through Khamlia — its earthen lanes, Gnawa heritage and daily life at the edge of Erg Chebbi.

Khamlia is a small village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, known across Morocco for its Gnawa musicians. This visit lets you sit with local players, hear the hypnotic pulse of the guembri and iron castanets, and learn where this music comes from — on terms set by the musicians themselves.
Many families in Khamlia trace their ancestry to sub-Saharan West Africa, to people brought north across the Sahara over centuries — many of them through the trans-Saharan slave trade. Gnawa music carries that history: songs of displacement, faith and healing, sung in a blend of Darija, Tamazight and words from West African languages. Gnawa is recognised by UNESCO as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage, and Khamlia’s musicians are proud keepers of it.
A typical session takes place in a music house or family courtyard in the village. You are welcomed with mint tea, then the musicians play a short set on the guembri (a three-string bass lute), the qraqeb (heavy iron castanets) and drums. Between pieces they often explain the instruments and the meaning of the songs, and you may be invited to clap or dance along. What you hear is a performance for guests, not the night-long spiritual ceremony (lila) that Gnawa communities hold privately.
We arrange visits with the musicians in advance and make sure they are paid fairly for their time. Some groups sell recordings or small instruments; buying anything is entirely optional and there is never any obligation. Please ask before taking photos or filming, especially of women and children in the village.
Timings shift with the season (sunrise and sunset change by more than two hours across the year).
We confirm these details in your written quote:
An easy, seated activity suitable for most ages. Music sessions can be loud in a small room — consider ear protection for very young children. The village is a residential community: walk with your guide, dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered is appreciated), and follow your guide’s advice on where to go.

No. What you hear is a performance shared with guests. Traditional Gnawa spiritual ceremonies (lila) are private community events and are not offered as a tourist activity.
Yes — we agree the visit with the musicians in advance and arrange a fair payment for their time. Any extra tip is up to you.
Often the musicians invite guests to clap, try the qraqeb or dance. It is never compulsory — just enjoy the music however you like.
