The experience

About this activity

The camps scattered across Erg Chebbi differ widely: some are simple shared-tent camps, others offer spacious tents with en-suite bathrooms. With this package you choose the level that suits you, and we organise the camel trek to and from it. The usual pattern is a late-afternoon ride in, catching sunset in the dunes, followed by dinner at camp and an evening that may include music around the fire (where fires are permitted). In the morning, there is time for the sunrise before breakfast and the ride or transfer back.

We are honest about what each camp offers. Before you book, we confirm whether bathrooms are private or shared, whether there are showers with hot water, and how much electricity is available for charging. Larger luggage normally stays behind at a hotel at the dune edge. Sunrise and sunset times vary a lot by season, so the departure time is set for your date.

  • Pick the camp level that suits you
  • Camel trek in and out (4x4 on request)
  • Sunset and sunrise in the dunes
  • Dinner and breakfast (typical plan)
  • Facilities confirmed in writing before booking

Safety

Safety, ages & accessibility

Camel riding is gentle but not for everyone. The camel kneels for you to mount and dismount, and the two lurches as it stands and sits can jar the back, so tell us beforehand about back or neck problems, recent surgery or hip issues. We do not recommend riding during pregnancy. A weight guideline applies for the animals’ welfare — the exact limit is set by the operator and must be confirmed before booking. On steep descents your guide may ask you to dismount and walk, which is safer for you and easier on the camel. Our camels are rested between rides, watered, and never overloaded; a guide leads the caravan on foot at all times. Bring warm clothes for winter nights; a 4x4 transfer can replace the camel ride if needed.

Good to know

  • Pack light — one small bag goes to camp.
  • Bring a headtorch for walking between tents.
  • Phone signal in the dunes varies.
  • Ask about vegetarian or other dietary options in advance.

Questions

FAQs

How is this different from the overnight camel trek?

Here the starting point is choosing the camp level; the camel trek is arranged around it. The experience is similar, but the facilities are agreed in detail first.
